1. WHO IS SUITABLE FOR A FACELIFT ?

Facelift is a procedure to correct facial aging changes. To answer this question, we need to understand the underlying changes that result in aging facial features.

Human face consists of :

  • skin

  • ligaments

  • muscles

  • bones

As we age, all these structures will be affected. The skin will lose its elasticity due to gravity and sun exposure. On top of this, the ligaments will also lose their ability to hold the skin taut. Ligaments are structures that connect muscles or bones to the skin.

Furthermore, the bones of the face will also undergo resorption and due to this, will lose their youthful projection. Loss in the bony mass and angles, will directly affect the overlying ligaments and skin as well.

In addition to this, the facial muscle mass will also be reduced as well during the aging process, causing further sagging of the overlying skin.

Facelift procedure is designed to correct these changes and reverse them back for a few years.

2. WHAT IS SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT?

Facelift can be divided into surgical and non-surgical.

Surgical facelift is the commonly seen procedure where a surgical incision is performed at the region in-front of the ear, followed by dissection to lift the sagging skin upward and backward and the, removal of the extra skin.

Two types of surgical Facelift:

  • Full Surgical Facelift

The pre-auricular skin incision is dissected down to the angle of mouth, chin and upper neck and the extra skin is pulled back before being excised. The remaining skin will then be repositioned.

  • Mini Surgical Facelift

The pre-auricular skin incision is dissected to a more limited extend, usually stopping at mid-cheek level. The rest of the steps are similar to Full-Facelift.

Non-surgical facelift or more popularly known as Threadlift, on the other hand, is when there is no long surgical incision is involved. Instead, the skin is pulled up using specially-made threads. This procedure is also known as threadlifts.
