SHOULD WE USE TOOTHPASTE ON BURNS?
Why You Should Never Apply Toothpaste to a Burn Wound
Applying toothpaste to a burn is a common home remedy, but it can make the injury worse. Ingredients such as menthol may create a temporary cooling sensation, while detergents, flavourings and abrasives can irritate damaged skin. Toothpaste may also trap heat, contaminate the wound and interfere with proper assessment and healing.
For immediate burn first aid, place the affected area under cool running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, toothpaste, butter or oils. Remove nearby jewellery or clothing unless it is stuck to the skin, then cover the area loosely with a clean, non-stick dressing.
Seek medical attention for deep or extensive burns, chemical or electrical burns, burns involving the face, hands, joints or genitals, or injuries affecting young children and elderly patients. Guidance from recognised medical sources also advises against applying toothpaste to burns (Mayo Clinic, American Academy of Dermatology).
